Triple Crown winner Waters ‘lucky’ to escape Feeney clash

Cam Waters admits he was lucky to escape a late tangle with Broc Feeney en route to overall victory at the Darwin Triple Crown.

The Tickford Racing star rejuvenated his season with a win, a second and a third across the three races, set up by vastly improved qualifying form.

That netted the Triple Crown, which since last year is awarded to the weekend’s top points scorer rather than requiring a weekend sweep.

Waters’ hairiest moment at Hidden Valley came on the out-lap after his final pit stop on Sunday when Feeney attempted an unlikely overtake at Turn 7.

“I came out of the pits on a cold tyre, which around here actually has a lot of grip straight away,” recounted Waters.

“But obviously Broc was trying to pass me while he had a chance and threw it up the inside at [Turn] 7 pretty optimistically.

“It was never going to work [and there was] contact. I was lucky I didn’t go off the road. If I did I would have bled a lot of positions.

“He had a crack, it didn’t work, gave the position back and that’s that.”

Feeney had initially complained on team radio that Waters had moved in reaction to his overtaking attempt, but later revised his view.

“I don’t think he expected I was going to do it,” Feeney told Speedcafe.

“So as he was pulling back over (to the racing line) I thought I’d have a crack up the inside.

“I think he kind of saw me and kind of held his line just as I was about to go in there.

“I let the position back straight away. I don’t think I had overlap, I just got him in the rear guard.

“There wasn’t enough room at the point where I went in.

“I said [on the radio] he probably reacted to me, but to be honest it was opening up and then kind of stopped.

“I let him have it back. I don’t know if it would have been a penalty or not but there’s no point losing a couple of positions over that.

“We were probably a pretty similar pace, he might have had a little bit more on me.”

Feeney ended a lacklustre weekend for Triple Eight fifth in the final race and sixth in the weekend pointscore.

Grove Racing’s Matt Payne and Kai Allen were tied for second, 18 points adrift of Waters’ tally of 272.

Sunday race winner Anton De Pasquale of Team 18 and Feeney’s Triple Eight teammate Will Brown rounded out the top five.
